Kapha
earth and water · heavy, cool, damp, smooth, stable, still
Kapha is earth and water — structure, lubrication, immunity, calm. It holds the body together and gives the steadiness other people lean on. When it accumulates you feel heavy, congested, slow to begin, and sleep grows long without refreshing. Kapha clears with lightness, dryness, warmth, spice and movement — and it usually clears more easily than it looks like it will.
When Kapha is settled
- Steady, patient, loyal, calm under pressure
- Strong body, smooth skin, good stamina
- Deep sleep, easy affection, long memory
- Holds people and projects for the long haul
When Kapha has risen
- Heaviness, mucus, congestion, a coated tongue in the morning
- Slow digestion, feeling full long after eating, water retention
- Sleeping long and waking dull; hard to start, hard to stop
- Attachment, holding on, comfort eating, quiet low mood
- Weight settling and staying
Light foods to favour
- Barley
- Millet
- Buckwheat
- Mung soup
- Leafy greens
- Broccoli
- Green beans
- Apple
- Pomegranate
- Ginger
- Black pepper
- Turmeric
Light, dry and warming. Favour pungent, bitter and astringent tastes; use ginger, black pepper, turmeric and mustard seed generously. Keep the evening meal small and early, and leave real space between meals — Kapha is helped as much by the gaps as by the food.
Lighten or leave for now
- Dairy, especially cold milk, cheese and yoghurt
- Sugar, sweets and heavy desserts
- Wheat and heavy breads in quantity
- Fried and oily food, nuts by the handful
- Large or late dinners, and eating when not actually hungry
A day of light meals
Often nothing but warm ginger water until real hunger arrives. If you eat: stewed apple with ginger and cinnamon, no dairy.
The main meal — barley or millet with mung, greens and warming spice. Well spiced, lightly oiled.
A small, thin, spiced mung soup, eaten early. Stop while there is still a little room.
Kapha season — late winter into spring
Damp, cool and heavy. Kapha gathered through winter now loosens, which is why colds, congestion and heaviness surface in spring. Lighten — warm, dry, well-spiced food, less dairy and sweetness, earlier and smaller dinners, more movement, and air moving through the house.
Eat and live a little against the season, not with it.
Your day, hour by hour
Rise early, before the heavy hours settle. Hot water with ginger. Scrape the tongue well.
Dry brush towards the heart, then a light oil — mustard or a little warm sesame.
Move enough to warm the body and open the breath. This is the non-negotiable one.
The main meal, well spiced. Then keep upright and moving — no afternoon sleep.
Ginger and black pepper water. Do the thing you have been putting off.
A small early dinner, an aired open room, bed by 10pm and up early rather than late and long.
Daily practices
- Dry brushing before the shower, then a light oil rather than a heavy one
- Move every day, and move enough to warm the body and quicken the breath
- Rise early — the hours after dawn are the heaviest for Kapha
- Warming spiced water: ginger, a little black pepper
- Breath with some energy in it, then stillness afterwards
- Keep the space around you open, aired and uncluttered
- Change one small routine each week so nothing settles into stagnation
If you only do one thing: get up early and move until you are warm.
Through the cleanse
Kapha benefits most from the emptiness — this is your dosha's medicine. Keep moving gently rather than lying down, stay warm, take the spices with gratitude when they return, and resist the long afternoon sleep however inviting it is. Lightness, not comfort, is what is being asked for.
